5 benefits of a tandem for people with disabilities
Cycling is sometimes difficult for people with disabilities. A tandem can offer a solution. In this article we give you 5 benefits of cycling on a Van Raam tandem.
Cycling with a disability
Cycling with a disability can be challenging. For people with visual, mental and physical disabilities. By cycling together with a companion on a tandem, cycling becomes a possibility for them again. This has several benefits:
1. Staying active
Cycling on a tandem is a great way to keep on exercising. Because you cycle together on a tandem, it is less heavy cycling than on a regular two-wheeler. On the Van Raam tandems you can (optionally) choose a freewheel hub. With a freewheel hub, the main driver of the bike decides whether the passenger cycles along or not.
Read more about the freewheel hub in the article 'The drive system on Van Raam special needs bicycles'.

2. Engage in an activity together
Cycling together on a tandem is a fun outing for both individuals. Because you sit close together on a tandem, it is possible to communicate with each other while cycling.
3. Sense of freedom
Cycling gives back a sense of freedom to people with disabilities. For people who can no longer cycle alone, a tandem is a great solution. They can feel the wind through their hair again. Van Raam believes that when people stay mobile and independent longer, they are happier. Cycling on a tandem makes this possible.

4. Different tandems possible
Van Raam has five tandems in the assortment, so there is always one that suits you. We have both two- and three-wheel tandems for adults and an adult and child. We also have a tandem where you sit side by side, instead of behind each other. Take a look at our tandems below:

Twinny
The Twinny is a two-wheeled adult tandem. With this bike, you sit behind each other during a bike ride, with more space between the two seats than the average tandem. One person steers and brakes, both can pedal.

Twinny Plus
The Twinny Plus is a tandem with three wheels. This tandem is based on the Twinny tandem, but has two wheels at the back. The nice thing about these three-wheel tandems is that you have a lot of stability and can easily get on and off when the bike is parked.

Kivo
The Kivo is a two-wheel tandem for a parent or companion who wants to cycle with a child. The child sits at the front of the tandem and has a good view of the surroundings. The driver sits on the back and can keep an overview of the child and traffic.

Kivo Plus
The Kivo Plus is a three-wheel tandem which provides more stability while cycling. The two rear wheels make it even easier to get on and off the tandem. The Kivo tandem has a low step trough and is therefore easy to use.

Fun2Go
On the Fun2Go side-by-side tandem, you sit next to each other. This makes it easy to communicate with each other and enjoy the surroundings together. The driver has full control over the bike and the passenger can optionally pedal along.
5. Different options available
The Van Raam tandems can be equipped with different options, so that the bike fully meets your needs. Popular options for our tandems are;
Backrest (with belt)
Different frame heights possible
Choice of front, or rear steering
Foot fixation or pedal shortener for pedal adjustment
